50 Shades of Green

Saving the planet is high up on most of our ‘to do’ lists, right? We are starting to favour re-usable canvas bags over their plastic counterparts, more of us have taken up cycling as our chosen mode of transport and there has been nationwide rejoicing over McDonalds decision to swap to paper straws. Sustainable living is the way forward, it’s a fact. Living responsibly and buying organic has become more than just a trend: it’s a lifestyle choice and a necessary one at that. And while thankfully, most of us are beginning to find ways to cut our carbon footprint, recycle, make dietary concessions and wear green, all in the name of reducing our negative impact on the planet, everything becomes a little more complicated when it comes to sex. But isn’t that always the case?

In partnership with The YES YES Company, we want to encourage as many of you as possible to ‘go green’ in the bedroom. YES, after being set up by gal pals Susi Lennox and Sarah Brookes in 2003, continues to be a trailblazer in the organic intimacy product range. Turns out, it’s not all that easy to source ingredients that are body safe, side-effect free and 100% pure and natural while simultaneously pleasurable and highly effective for use in the bedroom. It took the pioneers at YES three years to refine the perfect formula. And every minute was worth it, given that YES inevitably produced the first lubricant to contain no vagina-harming chemicals. Can I get a hell YES?

To Susi and Sarah, creating a revolutionary new brand that gave back to its consumers and the planet was key – they worried less about performing in the boardroom and more about hitting that green spot. From recyclable packaging to paraben-free ingredients and with a brand identity that is as pure as its product, these sustainably sexy products are a YES from me.

Boasting a Soil Association certified-organic seal of approval, YES’ range of intimacy products (vaginal moisturisers, cleansing washes and lubricants) are 96% plant or water-based and have filled the gaps left by chemical additives with ingredients like aloe, shea, sunflower oil, bees wax and cocoa. These alternatives are especially kind to sensitive areas when their synthetic counterparts can cause harm. At this point, it should go without saying, but all plant extracts have been responsibly sourced and the end-product created with zero animal testing. What’s more, YES are recommended on the NHS to treat women in the aftermath of gynaecological cancer and menopause. This is THE new way to water your lady garden. Thank us later.

Obviously, I leapt at the chance to trial these products (anything to feel less guilty about eating meat and buying a new outfit for every conceivable occasion), and haven’t been able to pull myself away since. Just when you thought sex couldn’t feel any better, the water-based lubricant is a libido booster and there’s a gentle yet reassuring fluff to your ego that, while getting off, you’re also doing good for yourself AND our planet. Plus, with the option to go that one step further with the intimate cleansing wash, you can feel your best when using YES. Each and every product is incredibly comfortable and easy to use. For me, personally, I often struggle to find a range that slips (pun intended) into my routine this easily, so I welcome anything that feels great and natural in daily use. I can’t speak from personal experience, but reviews rate these products as the best for post-pregnancy, menopausal and post-cancer dryness, too. How can you say no to something both empowering AND inclusive?

As Susi and Sarah say, “Our love for planet Earth is reflected in everything we do – creating glorious products that are amazing to use, kind to the environment, respectful of all life and natural…truly, madly, deeply natural.” Much like sex itself. So what are you waiting for? We know that we’re responsible for the saving of our planet and every little helps, so you’d better believe I’m opting for maximum pleasure in return for my gestures While you’re making conscious decisions to trade in your single use plastics and harmful chemically enhanced foods, do the same for your sex life and opt for guilt-free shagging and 50 shades of green.
